1.Background
Clean energy and global climate change are currently hot international topics. Even after more than 200 years of industrialization, only less than one billion populations gain the opportunities to live in the fully modernized society at the cost of global resources and ecosystems. China’s national GDP grew over 60 times in last 30 years. However, China has also become a large carbon dioxide emitter. To curb its carbon dioxide emission, China has made great efforts in recent years. China has been taking full advantage of clean energy technologies to promote a sustainable green economy. Right now, China has one of the world’s best favorite clean energy policy, as well as huge investment in the clean energy sector and man-made forest.
To promote China’s clean energy applications and market, and to facilitate the international cooperation in technology innovation, policy making and investment, "2010 Ordos International Clean Energy and Green Economy Development Forum "will be held from July 19th to July 21th, 2010 at Ordos City of Inner Mongolia, China. The Ordos city government and Tsinghua University are the organizers of this forum.
Ordos City of Inner Mongolia is currently a star city in China. In last nine years, its GDP grows more than 10 times: from 15 billion Yuan in 2000 to more than 200 billion Yuan in 2009 with per capita GDP of up to 18 thousand US dollars with the major contribution from the traditional energy sector. However, the impact from the science and technology sector still remains small. To improve the energy efficiency and develop new energy sources, the technology innovation and application in the clean energy could help Ordos a lot, which also make Ordos one of the best markets for the clean energy (low-carbon economy) application. This forum will bring unprecedented attention and support in the area of green energy to the city of Ordos, and try to help Ordos to establish the “Ordos Energy Model”, which may be turned into the future sustainable economic development strategy nationwide.
Tsinghua University has more than ten energy-related disciplines to undertake a large number of national key projects. It has broad collaborations with large-scale enterprises all over the world. Tsinghua is leading in several areas such as clean coal, advanced nuclear energy, green building, biomass, alternative energy vehicle, smart grid transmission and security, and national energy policy making. Research from Tsinghua’s labs has lead to a number of successful commercialization. Tsinghua University’s Laboratory of Low-Carbon Energy was established in November 2008, aiming to be the world-class research and technology innovation center in low-carbon energy sector. This forum will also present some research achievement from Tsinghua University in recent years.
On April 25, 2009, first China Cleantech Forum was hosted in W-hotel, New Jersey with the topics of the outlook of Clean Energy market and investment. The organizers include China Cleantech Group, Tsinghua University Alumni Association of Greater New York Area and some major associations. Among 140 participants are some distinguished scholars, technical experts, entrepreneurs and institutional investors. Topics such as clean energy policy and investments, market outlook for Sino-US clean coal technologies, green building etc. were covered. This time, China Cleantech Forum will bring tremendous oversea resources to Ordos as well as help to build up the international collaborations for Ordos and Inner Mongolia in a long run.
This forum also helps China to promote low-carbon energy technology applications and facilitate a better clean energy policy making. It will be a platform for government officials, technical experts, investors and production enterprises to work together to improve "energy efficiency" and formulate a better respond to the "global climate change."
